JANE HAMILTON on the steps of the school named for her on Daufuskie Island in South Carolina, September 1939. Formerly the Cooper River School, it was renamed in her honor after she donated land for a new building to educate the 35 African-American children nearby. She refused to accept money for the land. "She was glad to give two of her fourteen acres to help these Island boys and girls," reported J.B. Fulton, State Agent for Negro Schools, "although she is supporting two of her great grandchildren, one of whom has only one eye."
