CLARA COLEMAN, a 10th-grade student at the Fayette County Training School in Somerville, Tennessee, with her little sister and brother. This undated photograph was given to GEB president Wallace Buttrick by "an old time Southern gentleman" who was impressed by the sacrifices she made to attend school.
Notation on back of photo reads: Milks 5 cows, helps mother with breakfast, dresses neatly and drives 5 miles over rough roads to school. Out of 100 days of session she has attended 93. Little sister & brother with her. This was given to me by an old time Southern gentleman as a reply to the Snyder article in the Feb. 21 Atlantic. View original photograph |
